It’s National Volunteer Week and Choices for Youth (CFY) is looking for eager, green-thumbed volunteers to support our Outreach and Youth Engagement (OYE) Centre’s community garden.
CFY’s OYE Centre is located at 12-16 Carter’s Hill Place, in the heart of downtown St. John’s. OYE is the front door of CFY – it’s a safe space where a young person can enjoy a nutritious meal, build meaningful relationships, take a hot shower, find wrap-around supports for physical and mental health needs, and so much more.
A big part of CFY’s OYE Centre is the community garden, which has a dozen raised beds for growing fruits and vegetables that our wonderful chef Lois uses to prepare healthy, hearty meals for youth. Meals are offered during Outreach drop-in, Monday to Friday, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesdays), which means a lot of produce is needed!
OYE is currently seeking volunteers to provide support to the community garden. This volunteer opportunity would be at least one weekday per week for 1-2 hours per shift. Shifts are in the morning after 8:30 am.
Volunteers will be helping with a variety of agricultural tasks, including watering, weeding, pruning, raking, pest control, and harvesting produce. Please note that this volunteering opportunity involves outdoor physical labour and be aware that since we are heading into the summer, some days will be hot!
All volunteers must submit a satisfactory vulnerable sector check and criminal record check.
