Impact Construction X Habitat for Humanity NL

Updated: Jun 18, 2021

Impact Construction teams up with Habitat for Humanity NL to deliver job site training opportunities for new recruits.

It’s that time of year again: the days are getting longer, trees are blooming, and construction companies are gearing up for the summer season! At Impact Construction , Choices for Youth (CFY)’s construction social enterprise, the team is busy training two new cohorts of recruits for upcoming projects.

As Newfoundland and Labrador’s first construction social enterprise, Impact Construction is focused on ‘building what matters’ by training and employing youth aged 16-29 in the greater St. John’s area who are experiencing barriers to entering the workforce.

Before a young person is hired by Impact Construction, they attend a paid, 4-week skills-building program with the CFY training team. Topics covered in this program range from safety, carpentry math, and using tools, to core skills like resume writing, time management, and wellness. This pre-employment training time is split between classroom sessions and hands-on experience with skilled trainers at CFY’s Social Enterprise and Employment Centre.

Measure twice, cut once.

In May 2021, new Impact Construction trainees were able to demonstrate their skills by building a real deck, thanks to an exciting new collaboration with Habitat for Humanity NL and their Charter Avenue project. Under the guidance of Impact Construction General Manager Brian Hanley, the new recruits used their squares, measuring tapes, and carpentry math (measure twice!) and safely operated a number of power tools including drills/drivers, circular saws and jig saws (cut once!). The result was over 30 hours of job site training time for the new recruits and one solid deck for the Habitat house!
